Raw Image Extension adds native decoding for many camera raw formats and, in this release, adds support for Canon CR3 files alongside general bug fixes. The extension integrates as a codec so raw thumbnails, metadata and full images are available inside Windows File Explorer and the Photos app without a separate viewer.
- Core function: OS-level codec that enables thumbnails, metadata and image rendering for supported raw formats within File Explorer and Photos.
- New in this version: added support for Canon CR3 and stability fixes affecting decoding and metadata extraction.
- Compatibility: targets mid- to high-end camera raw formats; a broad list of cameras is supported, though some formats (for example, GPR) remain unsupported.
- Installation requirement: requires Windows 10 May 2019 Update (build 1903) or later; older builds cannot install the codec.
- Usability note: the package is not a standalone application and offers no direct UI—functionality is exposed to users through Windows apps such as File Explorer and Photos.
- Open-source basis: the extension is built on the libraw project (libraw.org); libraw’s supported-camera list and licensing details (CDDL‑1.0) are available from that project.
